Why is water in my fish tank keep turning green freshwater after a week?
I have a 10gal freshwater. with 3 fish take gold fish, a tetra and 4 other fish, I can not remember what kind they are. Cloudy water first round and after about 2 days in green. No Algy the sides of the tank … only the water turns green. They even have a new filter that work 20gal. tanks! It is frusterating .. any ideas?
You have to find out what is causing the growth of your tank. Changing light bulbs is not going to stop the growth of algae in the tank. Algae thrive in bright light and nitrates. Change light will make it worse. Ok, the tank is located near a heat source? ie, a record heat baseboard heating? Does it get any sunlight from windows? How about the temperature of your tank? You need not a regular floating themometer one of those stick on the side of the tanks. (not accurately record the temperature water) Ok, if everything here is good that you need to test your nitrates. very good reading is about 20-40 ppm. If you do not have a test kit, obtain or a single case, take a sample to a shop in confidence and to prove it. Some will do it for free. Phosphorus can also be unavailable. You can buy tablets of phosphorus in your pet store, usually a sheet of about $ 2.00. This pad can be cut to the size of your filter and add to it. These are always a good idea for the tanks anyway. Now, while you are waiting to either move the tank, or pills for the work you will have your tank clean. Scrape the sides of your tank. Use your Siphon and make a change of 10% water. You have to do a water change 10% every day for the week atleast a. Honestly however, the tablets will help eliminate most of the algae from phosphorus. Never make a change of 50% water in a saltwater tank. Not more than 25% in any time. Also, do not remove the fish unless absolutely necessary. This puts undue stress on the fish sure to change filters and clean up any decor you have.
