Choosing a Fish Tank Filter
A filter, along with a heater, is probably the most important part of any fish tank set up. Without it, the water in your fish tank will be much more like a stagnant pond and soon will be able to live in it, except for a nice film of green algae foam.
There are two main types of aquarium filters, internal and external. Both types of filters can be used in any freshwater aquarium or saltwater.
When internal filters is that there are two basic types. The first is the under gravel filter seen mainly in freshwater tanks. This consists of a plastic grid suggested that sits at the bottom of the tank. The gravel material or base is placed over the top and clear vertical tubes attached to holes in the filter. These tubes have either a head to sit on top or a bubbler inserted into them. Water is forced to flow through the gravel and back up the tube in the tank. The gravel in is the filter itself, collecting food and fish waste that is pulled down on it.
The second filter is more internal in nature along the lines of sump tank just below the main tank and is used primarily for saltwater tanks. There is an inner tube that allows water to flow into the sump where it is pumped through a series of filters that capture all the waste and bad bacteria. The filtered water is pumped back to the top of the main tank maintenance a steady flow going. This filter is a good option, but it is expensive and does not create a little background noise.
An external filter is the best choice for any tank fish, if you can afford to use it. All filters are made out of the tank, keeping the water filtered and unfiltered water separate until it is returned to the reservoir. A pair of long hoses to connect the filter in the tank, which supplies the filter and the other returns the filtered water into the tank. This type of filter is more effective, but also the most expensive.
You can buy any of these types of filters in your local fish store, but may have more difficulty finding the kind more expensive outside a pet store in general. The sump type filter tank will require to be altered or by commission. If you're going to spend the extra money in this type of creation it makes more sense to spend money on a good quality external filter in place. An external aquarium filter will cost more in front, but ultimately will save on costs maintenance and costs of fish, because it provides the best habitat they need to live a long and healthy life.
