Saltwater tanks are not too difficult to maintain unless you want corals / inverts in your tank. If the tank is going to fish only then you do not need many things new to your tank. Thouroughly First you need to wash the tank, filter and heater. Replace the filter cartridge and carbon sponge. You also need to sand and rock coral and crushed lace. Rinse substrate and everything well under running water. Never use soap or bleach or any chemical because it is extremely hard to remove. Once everything is washed, place the substrate in the bottom of the tank and place the stone lace accordingly. Next fill the tank with water, but be careful to try to make as little disturbance of the sand as possible. Then place the heater, lights, filter and everything and make sure you turn it works. Use a thermometer and make sure the temperature is kept constant between 75-80 degrees Fahrenheit. Then add about 1 / 2 cup salt per gallon water you have. About 10 cups full of salt. Use a hydrometer or refractometer to measure salinity and make sure it is between 1.020 to 1.026. That should be safe for all fish and invertebrate saltwater. Now unclouded everything and run about a week. Then go buy a bottle of "Marine SAT" or "salt water FTA." This product is 100% pure bacteria and helps accelerate the process of initiating a biological filter. Use the indicated doses shown on the bottle and accordingly to treat for another 1-2 weeks.
