Selfbrush – Concert and Interview
"In our own private fish tank" – these were the first words I heard when I entered the warm and friendly Club of Rome on a cold January night. It perfectly describes the atmosphere: the right number of people, the right music, everyone just swimming in the simple indie / folk chords of one-man band from Prague – Selfbrush. There were people sitting on the floor, in chairs against the wall, people standing and moving to music. Vaclav (Vac) Havelka was on stage, it was not too high on a platform, giving the audience a sense of intimacy with the artist. He was playing his guitar accompanied by his soft voice, which had a touch of foreign accent, giving her performance an exotic air. You could really sense the sincerity in his music, not just through his voice but also through this almost palpable, which penetrates through current, and emanating from his body.
The show ended, and casually walked off stage into the audience. This was quite normal, given the circumstances and environment, and soon we were having a great conversation with him about his music, his inspiration, and his career.
He has been making music for over ten years, and strictly DIY, has taught himself everything. It was a rough start, however, "at first was terrible," he says with a laugh, "is difficult when you're teaching yourself, "he continues, with a touch of self-satisfaction. We have come a long way and has released three albums as of now, the latest called "Three Names".
Selfbrush has been one-man band for quite some time, but throughout his solo career, has become Vac part of another band – If trees. When asked how this training took place, said that when he saw the band play instruments, "It seemed so natural they were missing a singer, I needed a band. It makes little sense to try something new. "Soon played together and the result was surprising. Selfbrush listening to music, one may feel that is fantastic in it's simplicity, but if you need more optimistic, more complex melodies Vac comforting voice, please, the trees is the band to listen.
All his lyrics are very diverse, and when asked what inspires him to write he replied vaguely, "inspiration is everywhere. I'm always writing. "He is reluctant to write about relationships, what with the overuse of the mainstream of the subject, but sometimes simply can not be avoided. This was the first time in Rome Vac, and it was thanks to Mattia Coletti, who had traveled to the Czech Republic and has promised to take Vac to Italy. Rome is not his only stop, yet he is also playing in some cities in northern Italy.
