Maintaining Your Fish Tank
To keep your fish happy and healthy, maintaining your fish tank is critical. It's easier than you think to maintain healthy tank, you can enjoy your fish hobby for years. Just 30 minutes every two weeks, to avoid most of the problems that can occur in the tank you may end up costing a lot of time and money. Regular maintenance also ensure the stability of the tank. You'll be surprised how well the fish can withstand minor variations in the water while the tank is maintained and that are healthy.
Water changes
If you've read anything on maintaining your fish tank, you've probably read about how important it is to change the water. With most aquariums, this should be done every two weeks. Before you start panicking and send your tank back to the store, no need to change all the water in the tank. Only 10-15% by changing the water's fine. Water filtered in the tank should be checked regularly to make your regular maintenance routine. You want to check for acid silicate and silica. These compounds may work their way through the filter membranes in a relatively short time.
Water tests
The water changes are not visible, so the test is so important. Make testing a normal part of routine maintenance will keep you on top of the chemical changes that may occur.
You can get a test kit will test pH and nitrite, nitrate and carbonate hardness. Most fish do best in water that is between 6.5 and PH 7.5. This gives them a little leeway if you change slightly in both directions. You want to keep the pH level as stable as possible. Carbonate hardness, or kh, tells the pH stability. If she comes to 4.5 dH (hardness grade) or 80 ppm, it is necessary to take measures to raise it. Fortunately, this is easy to do. Do not detect presence of nitrite unless you are cycling your tank in preparation for the addition of fish. If you find any, check ammonia levels as well. Your nitrates (other than nitrites) should be kept below 10 ppm in freshwater tanks and 5 ppm in saltwater tanks. If you have a reef tank, should aim at 0 ppm.
Aquarium Filtration
Keep the filter works correctly at all times. Change the filter material (cartridge, activated charcoal or thread dental) at least every four weeks for optimum filtration. The tests can give false readings if they are past their expiration.
